In the remote stretches of western South Dakota lies the forgotten town of Scenic, a place once enlivened by a busy road that fell silent when the Interstate to the north took its place. With a population of fewer than ten people, Scenic stands as a poignant reminder of the passage of time and the ebb and flow of human settlement. Through my camera, I have explored the desolate structures that once pulsed with life. The images capture the weathered facades of abandoned buildings and the remnants of once-thriving businesses and homes. These visual narratives delve into themes of impermanence, dreams lost, and the silent dialogues between past and present. “Echoes of Scenic” is not merely a documentation of physical structures, nor is it a commentary on rural decline. Instead, it is an exploration of the intangible aura and quiet beauty that envelop this town. The cracked paint, broken windows, decaying wood, signs of attempted recovery, and overgrown paths tell the story of lives lived, dreams long faded, and the relentless passage of time.
