Why A Non-Profit and How does it Work?

Why a Non-Profit—and How Does It Work?

My photography is rooted in three enduring sources of inspiration: the natural world, the work of other photographers, and my fascination with historic places.

The Natural World

White Sands

Nature as a muse is hardly unique—countless artists across centuries have drawn from its beauty and mystery. For me, its complexity is as compelling as its splendor. How did all of this come to be? And just as importantly—what does the future hold?

Many photographers have explored environmental degradation through more dystopian lenses, while others focus on capturing the breathtaking beauty of the natural world. Sometimes this serves to raise awareness; other times, it’s simply an act of reverence. Nature brings peace, harmony, and awe—and I return to it again and again.

One of my artistic cornerstones is a quote by Eliot Porter, from the preface to Intimate Landscapes:

“I do not photograph for ulterior purposes. I photograph for the thing itself, for the photograph, without consideration of how it may be used. Some critics suggest that I make photographs primarily to promote conservation, but this allegation is far from the truth. Although my photographs may be used in this way, it is incidental to my original motive for making them, which is first of all for personal aesthetic satisfaction.”

Whenever I find myself pulled in other directions with my creative work, I come back to that quote. It keeps me centered.

The Work of Other Photographers

Supporting and learning from other photographers is equally important to me. I stand on the shoulders of those who came before. Their images inspire me, teach me, and light the path forward. In the world of painting, Wayne Thiebaud was known for his admiration of and engagement with earlier artists. Art comes from art—and that applies fully to photography.

Historic Places

I’ve always been drawn to history. Visiting the places where history happened adds layers of meaning you just can’t get from books. I believe history is a teacher: it offers lessons on what to carry forward, and what to leave behind.

Why a Non-Profit?

In short, I want to give back to the sources of my inspiration. I have no desire to make a profit from my photography. Aside from minimal fixed costs to maintain this website, any net proceeds from print sales will be donated to organizations that align with the spirit of my work.

These may include:

National Parks Conservation Association

Center for Photographic Art – Carmel, CA

Viewpoint Photographic Art Center – Sacramento, CA

Mare Island Historic Park Foundation

The specific organizations may change over time, but they will always reflect the values behind my work. At the end of each year, I’ll share a summary with my subscribers and customers detailing the groups we’ve supported.
